The U.S. imported around 5,100 MT of rice starch in August, about 60 percent higher than the volume imported during August 2018. Buyers were likely playing a bit of catchup after imports slid notably during May-July.

With August’s strong showing, cumulative rice starch imports, near 31,700 MT, were down 5 percent year over year after posting a 12 percent YOY deficit in June and July. Rice starch imports in 2018 were a record 48,000 MT, and users may have had ample supply during the first half of 2019.
