The U.S. hog and pig population numbered 77.68 million head as of Sep. 1, a record for the date. September is usually also the year’s high mark in hog inventory (an exception was in 2014 during the outbreak of PED virus).

Pork production in August totaled 2.26 billion pounds, down 2.5 percent year over year—the first month with a YOY decline in 2019. Total Jan-Aug 2019 pork production was up 4 percent YOY. USDA expects U.S. pork exports to spike in Q4 2019 due to African swine fever in Asia.
