Cumulative harvest area for Mexico’s 2018/19 cane crush campaign reached 196,495 hectares (ha) as of Jan. 19, down 6 percent YOY. Cane crush, however, is not quite as far behind at 15.75 million metric tons (MMT), down 3.5 percent YOY. Sugar output for the season to date totaled 1.553 MMT, down 8.7 percent YOY.

For the week starting Jan. 13, cane crush was down 1.7 percent, and sugar output was down 8.7 percent year on year.

While cane yields are showing a slight improvement at 80.2 MT of cane per ha compared to 78.1 MT a year ago, the cumulative sugar recovery rate is half a point lower at 9.9 percent vs. 10.4 percent a year ago.
