Through Apr. 29, 2022/23, sugar production reached 4.86 MMT, down 11 percent from the five-year average and a four-year low. 

Cumulative low-pol output is down nearly 14 percent YOY. After the poor yields this season, a strong rebound is theoretically possible next season, but much of Mexico’s cane will be yet another year older, weighing on potential production. 

Under a recent agreement between major cane labor unions and IMSS, Mexico’s social security administration, cane industry laborers (including transport labor) and their families will be covered under the ELSSA (Entornos Laborales Seguros y Saludables) program. ELSSA’s goal is to improve worker health, safety, and welfare, in addition to productivity and quality. This program will cover cane industry practices in 257 counties over 15 states.
