Two million chickens died due to flooding in North Carolina after the storm dumped some 36 inches of rain. Multiple slaughter facilities were shut down, and numerous livestock died.
North Carolina is home to 8.9 million swine, 12 percent of the total U.S. herd, and 830.8 million chickens, 9 percent of U.S. total. Agriculture is the main industry in North Carolina, valued at approximately $87 billion.
Though structural damage is reported for at least two hog waste pits, there are no reports of water supplies being contaminated as a result.
