For 2019/20, ISMA estimates that sugarcane hectarage will fall about 10.4 percent from 2018/19 hectarage of 5.5 million hectares, in part due to poor rains in late 2018 and 2019 to date. Based on this sugarcane area, the preliminary forecast for 2019/20 sugar output was set at 28.2 MMT of sugar, down about 4.7 MMT or about 14 percent from estimated 2018/19 output of 32.95 MMT.
For all India, IMD reported that June rains were down about 30 percent from normal. Rains in the last month were reported as normal for Maharashtra but deficient for other growing states like Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh showed a deficit classed as large.
