USITC data for December show the U.S. exported 73,330 MT (dry weight) of HFCS during the month: 3,375 MT of HFCS-42 and 69,955 MT of HFCS-55, which raised cumulative 2018 HFCS exports to 1.046 MMT, slightly lower than annual exports in 2016 and 2017.

Monthly HFCS-42 shipments were generally stronger this year than last, and total exports of 50,570 MT were up 12 percent from 2017. Stronger demand out of Mexico supported the increase, and Mexico accounted for nearly half of 2018’s HFCS-42 trade, up from 40 percent in 2017 and 30 percent in 2016.

HFCS-55 exports to Mexico, however, were generally lower each month in 2018 than they were in 2017, and their cumulative total of 873,910 MT was down 2 percent year over year. Mexico accounted for 86 percent of U.S. HFCS-55 trade in 2018, compared to 84 percent in 2017, 81 percent in 2016, and 80 percent in 2015, indicating the U.S.’s increased reliance on the Mexican market for HFCS-55. Exporters saw higher values associated with HFCS-55 in 2018, though, which offset lower volumes. On average, HFCS-55 sent to Mexico in 2018 was valued around 20.4 cents per pound (dry), up from 19.9 cents in 2017 and 19.4 cents in 2016.
