Ginger is a plant that originates from Southeast Asia and belongs to the Zingiberaceae family. Its root is a versatile ingredient, from food to drinks.

Ginger-based beverages in the U.S. market have evolved far beyond ginger ale. Not only can ginger add a spicy flavor to drinks, but it may act as a complimentary ingredient to boost your health as well. Though ginger root does provide many benefits, there may also be side effects attributed to its use. It may cause heartburn, diarrhea, and throat irritation if consumed in large doses, per National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. That is why the recommended dosage is under 4 grams (about 1 tablespoon) of ginger extract a day. When used as a flavoring, ginger does not come close to that level on a per-serving basis, and moderation is key if you’re consuming more potent ginger formulations, such as shots.
