After drought reduced Argentina’s 2017/18 soybean crop from initial estimates around 55 MMT (million metric tons) to under 40 MMT, Paraguay is expected to become the third largest exporter for the first time ever. When Argentina has a good crop, Paraguay usually exports 4.5 to 5.5 MMT while Argentina exports around 8 MMT or more. However, this year Argentina is expected to export just 4.2 MMT, and Paraguay will take advantage of the more open market to ship around 6.3 MMT.
