Bearing acreage for almonds this year is estimated at 1.07 million acres, up from 1.0 million acres last year. Production in 2017 was a record 2.25 billion pounds, an increase of 5 percent from the year before thanks to more acreage offsetting a slight decline in yield, which fell from 2,280 pounds per acre in 2016 to 2,250 pounds per acre in 2017. This year, a freeze in February hit during almond bloom and will impact yield to some extent, although the recent crop progress report from Blue Diamond stated that damage was less extensive than originally thought. The new crop is benefitting from sunny, warmer weather.
Aug-Mar 2017/18 domestic almond shipments totaled 472.9 million pounds, up 6 percent from last season to date, a margin that has been consistent since November. Exports have also been strong, and cumulative shipments through March, at 1.14 billion pounds, were up 14 percent from 2016/17. Total shipments this season were 1.62 billion pounds, up 12 percent year over year.
